~ Miss August ~ August is a bit of a tricky month, because there isn't really any particular thing about it that's famous or well-known. For me, though, August has always represented a season of change. It's the when the leaves start looking yellow, when the afternoons start to get shorter, and, for most of us, it heralds the start of a coming school year, meaning new courses, new studies, new friendships, new relationships. And that process can be incredibly intimidating, but you just have to trust that there's a light at the end of the tunnel and make your way though. That's what this photo's about, to me. Hope you like it! ~ Emmy (Also, because I just know that someone is going to say that the flowers are more spring than summer, I did actually go and check the dates for this photo - it was done for May 2008 issue of Ocean Drive magazine, for a summer preview. In Canada, where I'm from, May is usually considered a summer month. Plus, anybody who's lived in a rural area will tell you that you don't get overgrown plants like this until late summer, and the leaves on the trees at the left hand side are definitely turning yellow. ...So please please please don't hate me...)

Amanda: These flowers do feel more summery to me than springlike. These seem like the late bloomers, so that's fine. What isn't fine is your expression. I'm not sure why, but I don't really like it. I love the concept, I love the idea, I love your hair, and you really do look like a princess here. But the way the light is hitting you, although effective, brings out some flaws in the way you're squinting. I just don't feel a connection to you. That's really the only thing that's irking me here, so it's otherwise wonderful. Good work

Joan: This photo is breathtaking! I love the concept so much. My problem with the photo is you look hunchbacked. As for this passing as an August month, I don’t see. It could be March, April, May or even June in my eyes. But I absolutely love this photo just wish you didn’t pick August.

Believe me, Joan, I'd have liked to pick an earlier month, but I'm in England, so I wound up reaching the signup sheet hours after most people.
Honestly, though, there's very little difference between the way August and June look, and the trees definitely looked like they were going yellow to me...

Beth: I don't know much about Geography but I just love this photo so much. I love your 'interaction' with the nature here. If this is what Canada supposed to look like on August, than I think you did a fantastic job, Emmy. But what's gonna happen to the flowers in September. Are they going to die?

Anna: I think August is fine for this, though this doesn't necessarily scream any particular month in my opinion. My main problem with this is definitely your expression; I must agree with Amanda, the squinting thing is not working. Your pose is okay, and I like the setting, but the light is bringing all of the emphasis to your face, so you want to make sure that is pitch perfect. Overall, I think this shot works for a calendar, but it's certainly got its shortcomings.
